Track listing Īll tracks written and produced by Søren Rasted and Claus Norreen, except where noted. Worldwide, the album has sold four million copies. Aquarius has been certified platinum by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) for shipments of one million copies inside Europe. This is a significant drop from their previous album Aquarium (1997), which peaked at number seven and spent 50 weeks on the chart. In the United States, the album debuted at number 82 on the Billboard 200 and spent six weeks on the chart. It became the third best-selling album of the 2000s in Denmark. As of August 2001, Aquarius had sold 265,000 copies in Denmark. The album became the second best-selling album of 2000, selling 174,523 copies. It sold 39,000 copies in its first week in Denmark, becoming the fastest-selling album of the decade. The album debuted at number one in Denmark and Norway while peaking inside the top ten in seven countries. The song was then released 16 years later, in 2017, through an EP of remixes. "Freaky Friday" was meant to be released as a single back when the band was still promoting the album, but it ended up being cancelled. Scandinavia and other European countries saw further releases of " Bumble Bees" and "We Belong to the Sea" during late 2000, both achieving only moderate success. It was the last release in most territories before the band split in 2001. The second single, " Around the World", also peaked at number one in Denmark, but only made number 26 in UK and did not sell highly in most regions. Another reunion tour was planned for 2017, prompted by the 20th anniversary of "Barbie Girl. The lead single, " Cartoon Heroes", peaked at number one in Denmark and Norway, reached number 7 in the UK in February 2000 and later received top 10 positions globally except for the US where it failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Then, in 2011, Aqua released their third album, Megalomania, to commercial success on the Danish charts.

A few reunions occurred in subsequent years, including a 2008 tour and a 2009 hits compilation. The 2000 follow-up, Aquarius, included the Top Ten British hit "Cartoon Heroes," but the group split one year later.

The follow-up, "My Oh My" (February 1997), went gold in only six days, becoming the fastest-selling Danish single of all time and paving the way for their breakthrough international hit, "Barbie Girl." The band's debut album, Aquarium, sold more than ten million copies worldwide upon its release in 1997. The song stayed on the charts for two months, receiving a platinum record in the process. Soon after, they secured another record contract with the Danish Universal Music, which released their first single, "Roses Are Red," in September 1996. Disappointed with the song's lack of success, the bandmembers decided to reinvent themselves as Aqua (allegedly, this name was derived from a poster featuring an aquarium hanging in their rehearsal room). The four soon formed the band Joyspeed, whose single "Itzy Bitzy" spent one week on the Swedish charts before vanishing. During this time they met future member René Dif (rap/vocals), who introduced them to Norwegian singer Lene Grawford Nystrøm. Storming onto the global music scene in the fall of 1997, Danish dance-pop outfit Aqua aroused controversy when Mattel filed a lawsuit against them for the sexual overtones inherent in their breakthrough hit, "Barbie Girl." The roots of the quartet trace back to 1989, when Claus Norreen and Søren Rasted (both keyboards/drum machine) were working together on the soundtrack for a Danish film, Fraekke Frida.
